7 Fun And Easy Day Trips To Take From Royal Oak, MI

by Stransky and Company

Royal Oak is abundant in things to do on its own. However, once in a while it is nice to get away and do something a bit different. Below are some of the best day trips from Royal Oak.

1. Frankenmuth

One of the most popular destinations for day trips is Frankenmuth, just 1.5 hours north. This is a German heritage town with everything from water parks to fine dining and unique shops. On the list of must-dos while in Frankenmuth are the Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, Cheese Haus, Zehnder’s Restaurant, and the Bavarian Inn. There are several festivals throughout the year, including the Dog Bowl, Balloons Over Bavarian, Auto Fest, Oktoberfest, and World Expo of Beer.

On your way to Frankenmuth, you can also stop in Birch Run if you like shopping at Outlet Stores. Be sure to stop by Tony’s Diner for some incredible food at great prices.

2. Belle Isle

Belle Isle is a mere 30-minute drive from Royal Oak on the Detroit River. While it is most notable for the raceway, there is so much more it has to offer. You can visit the aquarium and the conservatory, not to mention it is a great place to settle for a picnic.

3. Toledo & Sandusky, OH

Ohio may not be the first place most people think of for day trips. However, there are plenty of options. Toledo is a mere hour from Royal Oak and is home to the Toledo Zoo, a little less crowded than Detroit. There are also lots of cultural attractions to meet whatever taste you desire.

Sandusky is most notable in the area for Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world. There are also several water parks, resort hotels, and a marina.

4. Ann Arbor

Most people know Ann Arbor because of the main campus of the University of Michigan and Michigan Stadium. If art is your style, be sure to check out the Art Fair over the summer, or the Museum of Art at U of M. Take a stroll through downtown for great food like the Gandy Dancer or catch some comedy at the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase.

5. Lansing

Competing with Ann Arbor is Lansing, home to both the state capital and Michigan State University. While you are there, take an informative tour of the state capitol building either self-guided or sign up for one of the tours with a knowledgeable staff member. Another great option is the Lansing River Trail. It is a 13-mile long trail that stretches all the way from Waverly Road to Old Town and a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

6. Grand Rapids

About two hours west of Royal Oak is Grand Rapids. You can tour breweries like Bell’s or the vineyards of St. Julian’s Winery. Also, check out the Air Museum in Kalamazoo or the Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids.

7. Detroit

Don’t forget the sights just down the road from Royal Oak. In downtown Detroit, you can catch the Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, or Pistons. There is also the historic Detroit Opera House and Fisher Theatre. If you prefer the high life, consider spending some time at one of the three major casinos.
